Crazy Paving is a type of natural stone that forms from volcanos, metamorphic and sedementary rock around the world. According to Wikipedia, crazy paving are stones made of natural rocks and is a means of hard surfacing used outdoors. You will see them mostly in gardens, driveways as well as wall claddings. Paving stones of irregular size and shape are laid in a haphazard manner sometimes with mortar filling the gaps between. Read our blog on what is Crazy Paving for more information.
The main difference between crazy paving and crazy pavers terminology is essentially the same crazy pavers and crazy paving are both suitable to indoor and outdoor application.
Random crazy pavers Melbourne are perfect for outdoor application such as pool paving, garden sitting area, patio paving, stepping stones, driveway pavers and other outdoor pavings. You can also use crazy paving for indoor flooring and wall cladding.
If you want to install crazy paving pavers in Australia, there are two types of natural crazy paving to consider. Natural form crazy paving is thicker and must be laid in a wet mix slurry outside the home by an expert tradesman. Calibrated crazy paving, on the other hand, is thinner and easier to install, suitable for indoor and outdoor installation. There are two methods of installation – adhesive bed and sand and cement.
Adhesive bed is best suited to calibrated crazy paving installed onto a concrete slab and involves cleaning the laying surface, applying adhesive, and then laying the stones in the adhesive mix. After this, the stones should be compacted evenly and consistently to ensure they adhere well, and consistent open joints should be left.
The sand and cement method (4 parts sand to 1 part cement) is ideal for areas with no existing slab. First, the soil should be excavated, leveled, and filled with roadbase, which should be heavily compacted. For the sand and cement mix, you will need white pre-washed sand, white cement, Efflock (to reduce efflorescence), and Bycol (to keep the mix workable). The mix should be creamy, with no visible signs of sand or cement.
Once the mix is ready, the stones should be laid in the wet mortar mix, which should be 25mm thick and evenly spread with no voids. A bonding slurry compound should be applied to the back of each stone, and the stones should be gently tapped down with a rubber mallet. Consistent open joints should be left, and the stones should be leveled using a grid pattern of stringlines.
It is important to note that cutting stones can release crystalline silica, which can cause health issues, so protective equipment should be worn. After an area is laid, it should not be loaded for a certain period to enable the adhesive or mortar mix to achieve peak strength.
